Media Composer v2.8.3 / NewsCutter v2.8.3 Released - Avid Community
This release continues to be supported in a Windows XP 32-bit environement ONLY. Windows Vista support will be offered in a future release.
This release includes support for Quicktime 7.3.1.
The supported NVIDIA graphics driver is version 91.85.
You must be running the following software in shared environments: Interplay v1.2.3; Unity MediaNetwork v4.1.5, v4.2.3, v5.0; Avid Unity ISIS v1.3a, v1.4
-------➤ Sound TC was counting at 24fps as opposed to 30fps in 1080p23 projects, causing the Sound TC information to drop out before the end of the clip. This has been fixed.
➤ Previously importing or capturing new clips in local bin into Avid Interplay did not update auto-reservation time.
➤ Previously, you might have received a "FatalAbortAssertion failed" error when loading master clips with Pan/Volume changes with Dynamic Relink enabled. This has been fixed.
➤ Effects that were nested inside a submaster effect might have appeared as black instead of letting the lower video layers show through. This has been fixed.
➤ Previously after opening, closing, or saving a bin, the system might hang. "Not responding" would appear in the title bar. This has been fixed.
➤ Previously, locators placed on a title track did not reappear after the original title media was deleted and then title media was recreated.
➤ Previously, if you used the Audio Mixer tool to change gain and or pan, and then checked the clip into Avid Interplay, when you checked the clip out on another editor, the changes to gain or pan were lost. This has been fixed.
➤ When checking in XDCAM proxy media into Avid Interplay, you might have received a C++ Runtime Error. This has been fixed.
➤ Previously, sequences with imported TIFF files might not have checked in and out of Interplay properly. You might have seen an "Unsupported pixel format" error. This has been fixed.
➤ Previously, you might have received the error message: "Sequence refers to non-existent tracks in clip" when you try to play a sequence that has been updated in Interplay by Pro Tools. This occurred when the original sequence's timecode did not match the Pro Tools sequence timecode. This has been fixed.
➤ If you have problems with batch capture accuracy for footage captured over 1394 due to undetected small timecode breaks, enable the "Enable detection of small timecode break" option located in the Capture Settings DV& HDV tab.
➤ Previously, you might have been unable to transcode 720p 50 to 1080p 25. This has been fixed.
➤ Previously, you might have received a "Video Overrun" error when capturing 720p or 1080p with more than 2 AES/EBU audio tracks. This has been fixed.
➤ Previously, it might have taken a long time for the editing application to log on to Interplay if a full text search on the Interplay database was running at the same time. This has been fixed.
➤ Previously, if you transferred a sequence with a long name to AirSpace, the sequence would fail to transfer with a "requested function is not implemented" message. A more accurate message of "Sequence name exceeds 63 characters" now appears.

Avid Shows New Thinking at Editors' Lounge | Studio Daily
BY Matt Armstrong Source: Studio Daily
If you've been watching these AlphaDogs Editors' Lounge videos you know that these guys can be quite tough on manufacturers, and Avid in particular recently. Avid reps jumped into this fire to show their latest hardware (Nitris DX and Mojo DX) and software versions (Media Composer and Symphony 3) last month. The reaction, somehwhat surprisingly for this crowd, was overwhelming positive. They even cheered. So what has them excited about Avid's new releases?
Avid reps spoke about major advances, including performance improvements and the ability to mix formats in the timeline as well as select raster types, but they also showed off the smaller changes that will make editors' lives easier. And if you are patient, there's a few hints about Avid's future plans to deal with footage from the RED camera. Watch it all below.

Firefox 3 When Add-ons Do Not Work
Firefox 3 When Add-ons Do Not Work
Posted by Martin from gHacks
I finally upgraded from Firefox 2 to the latest release candidate of Firefox 3 and immediately ran into a problem. My RSS feeds were not showing up at all in the Bookmarks and they only did so after importing an old bookmarks.html file from the Firefox profile folder which in turn duplicated every other bookmark. Took a while to remove the duplicates again but I now have my RSS Feeds in the Bookmarks Folder as well.
It turned out that my favorite RSS add-on Brief for Firefox was not compatible with the release candidate 2. I tried to force compatibility which did not work either. Now here is the interesting information that might help you if you ran into a similar problem. If one of your add-ons is not compatible to the latest Firefox version you could visit the developer’s homepage to see if he did post a new version or a workaround. It turned out that the developer was busy creating Brief beta versions, the latest on his homepage was Brief 1.2 beta 2 while the latest on the official Mozilla website was Brief 1.1. Brief 1.2 beta 2 is fully compatible to Firefox 3 and I was able to select my feeds and use the RSS Feed add-on ever since.
Ballmer Tells the Washington Post That Print is Toast
by Erick Schonfeld
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer sat down for lunch with editors and reporters at the Washington Post and told them print will be dead in ten years:There will be no media consumption left in ten years that is not delivered over an IP network. There will be no newspapers, no magazines that are delivered in paper form. Everything gets delivered in an electronic form.
I just hope the Post’s Website will still be around because it is a great distribution partner for TechCrunch.
But seriously, we’ve heard these predictions before. And it is easy to make them again with the print media industry suffering a major contraction as advertising dollars flee elsewhere. Just earlier this week, I was on a media panel at NYU where Vanity Fair media columnist and Newser founder Michael Wolff told Newsweek editor Johnnie Roberts:
It’s a good line, and in general Wolff was pretty much the only person I agreed with on the panel. Still, I am not so sure print is ever going away. Paper is a more enduring technology than Ballmer or Wolff would have you believe. What is endangered is the current set of business models that produce print media. If the those businesses go away, obviously so do their products. But that presumes that new print businesses won’t emerge to take their place. Maybe they won’t be as profitable and maybe they won’t have as broad a reach, but as long as there is demand for books, newspapers, or magazines somebody will figure out a way to fill it.If Newsweek is around in five years, I’ll buy you dinner.

Land Art - Urban Art
Land Art Documentary Brad Schwede from brad schwede on Vimeo.
A while back I would have been sitting on my lazy behind watching stuff like this on ABC on a Sunday arvo waiting for the footy thinking "What the...!!!???"
Well, while this guy is out there doing and making it, I'm still sitting on my bum.
Brad Schwede , one of Australia's hottest designers is carving a swathe of destruction through "old" media right now, while retaining his soul as an artist.
Brad is ripping a new hole in the Digital Signage Industry, leading the way in DS design.
His work is in demand by some of the biggest players in Australia, for the simple reason, Brad understands visual communication, he breathes it.
As you would expect from an artist of this caliber he constantly explores new ground, His latest work in 3D Graffiti is sublime.
The lesson here? Credibility is paramount, hire a monkey at your peril.
By the way, have you seen the compression quality? A masterful understanding of this black art.
Target launches another in-store TV channel, this time in pharmacies
Bill Gerba from Digital Signage News reports.
According to the In-Store Marketing Institute, Target is testing a new addition to its Channel Red in-store TV network that will be put into 100 pharmacy departments (to start) and will focus on, "health and wellness products across various categories and departments, including apparel (the chain's exclusive Champion C9 line), electronics (Nintendo's Wii Fit video game) and grocery (organic SKUs from private label Archer Farms). The network lets the chain 'bring its health and wellness strategy full circle,' according to a Target spokesperson."
As we all know, wellness is in right now (sounds silly -- shouldn't it always have been?), and Target is right to try and capitalize on the trend to the fullest extent possible. We've seen a huge surge in activity in medically-related digital signage networks over the past 9-12 months, I'm guessing for the same reason. But while the medical-ish networks always try to hide the consumerism stuff behind educational and informational content that's medically relevant, it's unclear what content approach Target will be taking with their wellness channel. Will it just be commercials? Will it be something quasi-entertaining, like what they have running elsewhere on channel Red? Will it be something entirely new and exciting? I'll have to wait until there's one in my area to check out, but if anybody has seen the new channel in place, leave a comment and enlighten us all.

Blackmagic Design H.264 Video Recorder
This tasty object hit my radar the other week, why?
The tech specs are full of win, and if true, I just might have the best bang for buck hardware encoder I can lay my hands on, this promises to be the sweet spot in the middle.
A/V $199 US
SDI $299 US
Pinnacle (AVID) has just released a similar item, but I'm just not impressed, looks simple and is, with unimpressive encode options. The "Press and Go" unit looks hot as does the model flogging it, but the specs just don't cut it for me, single aspect only is a killer, I know Youtube is still 4x3, but I'm publishing 1920x1024 evey day.
However, remember this is not a plugin for your Symphony and Avid has been catering to a broad market of late, Pinnacle has always been solid supplier to the Mid/DV crew
There are a truck load of these gadgets out there right now, but its great to see Blackmagic join in, sad news is, not till SEPT 08 (Aust) Still, I'll be hanging out, at that price point , and with BM's reputation. Its worth my wait.

An Earth Shattering Moment.
Surprised? No, but once in a while a fog lifts and a glaring spotlight is turned upon ones thoughts in a way that solidifies and slams you out of your musings in into immediate action.
This article "Gin, Television and Social Surplus" by Clay Shirkyon is one such document and is the catalyst for my decision to turn all my energy to the front of the wave. There is a paradigm shift occurring with how future generations relate to media. Media is no longer passive, and as a content creator, my very survival hinges on my ability to adapt.
Here's the pertinant passage.
"I was having dinner with a group of friends about a month ago, and one of them was talking about sitting with his four-year-old daughter watching a DVD. And in the middle of the movie, apropos nothing, she jumps up off the couch and runs around behind the screen. That seems like a cute moment. Maybe she's going back there to see if Dora is really back there or whatever. But that wasn't what she was doing. She started rooting around in the cables. And her dad said, "What you doing?" And she stuck her head out from behind the screen and said, "Looking for the mouse."
Here's something four-year-olds know: A screen that ships without a mouse ships broken. Here's something four-year-olds know: Media that's targeted at you but doesn't include you may not be worth sitting still for. Those are things that make me believe that this is a one-way change. Because four year olds, the people who are soaking most deeply in the current environment, who won't have to go through the trauma that I have to go through of trying to unlearn a childhood spent watching Gilligan's Island, they just assume that media includes consuming, producing and sharing."
For those of us who have basked in the glow of old media it's time to take heed and shake ourselves into action.
